Can we learn from this years iconic Christmas adverts?

How many times have you seen the Coca-Cola advert being shared on social media, or someone you know commenting on how the John Lewis advert means it must be close to Christmas time.

At this time of year, people all over the country huddle around their laptop or tablet to watch, cry or laugh at another heart-warming advert all about Christmas, Penguins and love fills the room.

These adverts have almost become as famous as East 17, Wham and Mariah Carey in terms of Christmas favourites.

But what makes these adverts so iconic? Do other businesses have Christmas adverts? Of course they do, so what makes John Lewis, Coca Cola and now Sainsbury’s so special?

Well ‘usually’ they’re not actually trying to sell you anything, although John Lewis have broken that golden rule this year with the plethora of gifts relating to Monty and Mabel.

Check out the perfect penguin waddle, the animators got it absolutely spot on…

Generally speaking though these types of adverts monopolise on the overall feel of Christmas; the excitement, warmth, family, love, and of course, they keep this up year after year.

Who can forget ‘Holidays are coming, holidays are coming…’.

They are now synonymous with the season and now the public would be baffled if Coca-Cola or John Lewis DIDN’T have their yearly advert!

If you’re a business owner, and you benefit from a certain season, it makes sense to target your marketing towards it. What feelings does the season give out and how can you show that in your seasonal message?

Pull at peoples heartstrings with music, happy families and maybe a cute animal (like Monty the Penguin).

After all, if Coca-Cola can change Santa’s outfit from green to red, just think what you could do!
